How to Transfer Money India to IBKR: Methods, Charges, Real Example

On 15 May 2026, I transferred money directly from State Bank of India (SBI) to Interactive Brokers (IBKR) using SBI YONO international remittance.

What surprised me was not the process — it was the exchange rate.

For years, many Indian investors assumed private banks like ICICI or HDFC always provide better forex rates for outward remittances. But after comparing live rates during an actual transfer to IBKR, SBI turned out to be significantly cheaper.

Why I Chose IBKR

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is one of the most popular global brokers for international investing. It offers:

  • Direct US stock investing
  • Access to ETFs, bonds, options, futures, and global markets
  • Very low forex conversion costs
  • Better long-term flexibility than many fintech apps

Unlike platforms like INDmoney or Vested, IBKR gives you direct access to international markets without relying heavily on intermediary wrappers.

For serious long-term investors, IBKR is usually considered one of the best global brokers.

Why Direct SBI → IBKR Is Better Than Some Fintech Routes

Benefits:

  • Direct ownership of assets
  • No unnecessary platform layer
  • Better withdrawal flexibility
  • Institutional-grade broker
  • Lower long-term FX costs
  • Better transparency

IBKR itself is also known for extremely low forex conversion costs internally compared to many retail platforms.

Processing Time

One thing that genuinely surprised me was the transfer time.

After submitting the SBI outward remittance request through YONO Net Banking, the status initially showed: In Process

The money was credited to my IBKR account in approximately 3 hours

This included:

  • SBI forex processing
  • SWIFT handling
  • Citibank intermediary routing
  • IBKR reconciliation

Since I had already:

  • added the beneficiary earlier,
  • created the deposit notification inside IBKR,
  • and selected “Guaranteed / OUR” charges,

The process became very smooth.

For a traditional Indian bank outward remittance, a 3-hour turnaround was honestly much faster than expected.

Many people assume SBI international transfers are slow compared to private banks, but in my case the transfer was processed and reflected in IBKR on the same day within a few hours.
